About this project
Yosemite High Sierra Camps is an independent community resource — not an official National Park Service or concessionaire site. It exists because these camps are worth remembering, and worth keeping.
Document the history
Tell the story of all five High Sierra Camps — their origins, facilities, and current status — as an accurate, sourced record.
Support the people who keep them running
Be a resource and a constituency for the Park Service, the concessioner, the Yosemite Conservancy, and everyone who wants the camps open: sourced history, a counted community, and public support, offered in good faith.
Preserve community memory
Gather supporters' personal stories and historical photos — both advocacy and an informal archive of a beloved place.
Sourcing & accuracy
Everything stated here about the camps' history and status is drawn from public sources — the National Park Service, the National Register of Historic Places, Wikipedia, and contemporary reporting — and cited on each camp's page. Where a fact is reported or anticipated rather than confirmed, we try to say so. If you spot an error, please let us know.
Who's behind it
This site is built and maintained by Jorma and a few fellow camp helpers from seasons past — after a few summers in the High Camps, you never quite get over Yosemite. Jorma was hired by Nic Fiore and worked at Merced Lake alongside Gary. Jorma also runs halfdome.net, a daily timelapse of Half Dome and Yosemite.
This site is run by volunteers who love the High Sierra Camps. It is not affiliated with the National Park Service, the Yosemite Conservancy, or any concessionaire.
